An annual Christmas event for the isolated and lonely is to be held in Kelham Island this December.

The Better Together Project is an organisation that host yearly Christmas events for people who find themselves alone around the festive season.

The event is usually held in the Town Hall, but this year will take place at The Mowbray.

Volunteer Sara Waterson said: “Seeing everyone dancing and singing along to the performers, it’s just the nicest day!

I also do love the lady from one of the nursing homes who has turned up in her dressing gown before and drinks too much wine and has the best time, she’s the lady you need at every good party!”

The project launched four years ago with the aim of combatting loneliness amongst the older generation in Sheffield.

One guest said: “It has transported me back to the best days of my life.”

The event offers a Christmas feast, gifts, hampers, free transport, and a range of entertainment, including a jazz band, magician, and swing singer.

The project relies on donations and volunteers to run as the event is free. This year it is sponsored by Henry Boot Construction Ltd.

Volunteer Nicola Priestley said: “I can honestly say each year I’ve volunteered it’s made my Christmas. Seeing how happy everyone is and feeling that community spirit! Amazing!”

A fundraiser will be held on 7 November at Laycocks Sports Club for the event.
