Kelham Island won ‘the great neighbourhood’ prize at the 2019 Urbanism Awards in London last Wednesday night.

The South Yorkshire area beat Ancoats, Manchester and Hackney Wick, London for the national award.

Kelham Island and Neepsend Community Alliance (formerly KICA) have recently helped transform the neighbourhood by organising litter picks and river clean ups  to keep the space looking great.

They reacted to their victory on their Facebook page, saying:

“We were recently shortlisted for the best Urban Neighbourhood in the UK. Yesterday we dolled ourselves and headed down to London for the awards.

“Anyway, WE WON!

“Thanks to everyone involved. Our community is made up our residents, businesses and visitors who have all contributed to making it such a wonderful place!”
